On macOS 26, Translate uses the translator built into macOS, with no setup. macOS 13 to 15 don’t have it, and even on 26 it isn’t always there. That’s why a free DeepL key is worth it. It takes three minutes; the steps are below.
- What you select is never saved or logged
- With DeepL, the text goes to DeepL and nowhere else
The app has a short tutorial for this. In the settings window, click Try it on the spoon’s page or press Command 5 ⌘ 5 for Tutorials.
Get a free DeepL key (about three minutes)
The free plan gives you 500,000 characters a month. That’s a lot of messages.
- Go to deepl.com/pro-api and choose Sign up for free → DeepL API Free. DeepL asks for a card to check you’re a person. The free plan never charges it.
- In your DeepL account, open API Keys → Create key and copy the key. Free keys end in :fx.
- Click the spoon in the menu bar → Open TeeSpoons → Translate and paste the key into DeepL key. teespoons checks it with DeepL and keeps it only in your Keychain. With Translate with on Automatic, your Mac translates what it can and DeepL does the rest. Choose DeepL to send everything to DeepL.
